I have listed tools of necessity when making sourdough. Because you can really start to go down a rabbit hole and think you need everything to bake the *perfect loaf BUT in reality you don’t.

Bannetons

You can usually find cane bannetons online easy or in a cooking shop. Link below.
Wood pulp bannetons however are a little bit harder to come across in AUS and tend to be a bit more expensive. BOTH are perfect and do the job.

Dutch Ovens

Having a Dutch oven is the way to cooking good bread however you do not need to spend a lot of $$$ to get the same effect.

When I started baking I was using a $30 cast iron pot from Kmart (which I still use) and works really well!

If you are wanting to upgrade these are great options:

Lodge Cast Iron
Brunswick Bakers Cast Iron

Dough Whisk

I found having this was helpful when mixing dough by hand - again you can still make sourdough without this.

You can pick them up from most cooking shops but I have added the link here with the one I tend to buy and have found to be sturdy.

Digital Scale

A MUST when making sourdough. Weighing just is really helpful and allows for a more accurate measure of water and flour when making your dough and starter.

I have had a few from Kmart which do the job!

However I have just recently bought this one when scaling up as it is a bit bigger.

Bench Scraper

Really helpful when handling dough on the bench and cutting dough.

Any you can find online or in the shops will be great. I have added one here for reference.

Bread Lame

Scoring bread is much easier (and prettier) with a razor. Buying a lame a great idea so you don’t 1. cut yourself and 2. can help create certain scores in your sourdough.

I buy my razors in bulk here. And have a few different style lames.
- Curved lame
-
Straight lame
-
UFO lame

*most times when you buy a lame they come with 5-10 razors.

Dough Scraper

Dough/bowl scraper is helpful to have when mixing your dough by hand.
